			ICUに入学して初めて出会う授業が英語教育プログラム（English Language Program；ELP）です。ELPは4月入学生のための語学科目で、学科を問わず原則として全員が履修します。英語の必修単位は他大学の3倍に近く、1年次の相当時間と2年次の一部を費やします。1年次のELPはAcademic Reading and Writing (読解と論文作法)とReading and Contents Analysis (精読と英文構成法)、そしてCommunicative Strategies（「読む・話す・聞く」技能の習得）の３つ授業によって構成されています。 2年次のコースではTheme Writing（論文作成法）とSophomore Englishの２つの授業になっています。1年次のプログラムを修了した時点で基本的な英語運用能力が身についているので、2年次のELPでは英語で開講される科目をとる前のステップとして、より実践に近いスタイルで行うクラスが開講されています。ELPは高校までの文法や英語力の強化だけでなく、ICUの掲げるリベラル・アーツの基礎として、たとえば批判的なものの考え方、日本語と異なる論理思考など、大学での勉強全般を有効に導く技法も学びます。ELPの目的は、学生が英語での授業を受けられる、すなわち英語で学問する力を身に付けるところにあります。つまり、「英語を」学ぶのではなく、「英語で」何かを学ぶためのコースなのです。ELPはその先にある学びをサポートするために存在しています。

			ELPを体験することができる特別授業です。簡単な英語で行われますので、ICUの英語学習プログラムに興味がある方なら、どなたでも受講できます。
			The Power of Perception

This lecture has been given occasionally in the open campus of ICU because it's easy to understand. It would be simmilar to the classes of ELP(English Language Program), and aims at letting students understand the lecture in English. Ken Enochs : Graduated the University of Puget Sound, studied American literature. Now interested in literature of exploration.

Michael Pronko currently teaches English, film and composition at ICU. He has an M.A. in Comparative Literature from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and another M.A. in Education from the University of Kansas. His B.A. from Brown University was in Philosophy. His primary research interests include film, composition and literature. He also writes a regular column on the Tokyo jazz scene.
